Frequently asked questions
The Aurora forecast gives a good indication of activity, but the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon—unpredictable and magical! Our experienced crew monitors the latest forecasts, solar activity, and local weather conditions to maximize your chances of seeing the lights. Even on nights with low activity, the Aurora can still surprise us.
For a 3-day Aurora forecast in Tromsø, we recommend checking the Norway lights forcast website.
The Northern Lights season in Tromsø runs from September to April, with peak activity typically between October and March. The best time to see the Aurora Borealis is on clear nights, away from city lights.
We know how much seeing the Northern Lights means to you, and while our expert crew does everything possible to find them, nature sometimes has other plans.
That’s why we offer a free ticket to join our next available Northern Lights cruise if you don’t experience the aurora on your trip!
How it works:
- If no Northern Lights appear during your cruise, our captain or crew will inform you on the way back.
- You’ll be given a code to book your free ticket for the next available Northern Lights cruise (subject to availability, valid only for this season).
- This offer does not apply to the final cruise of the season on March 31.
- The ticket is non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for cash.
We recommend dressing warmly, as you’ll be spending time outdoors to fully enjoy the experience. The Arctic weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key!
Tip: Even if the forecast looks mild, temperatures at sea can feel much colder due to wind chill. Dress warmer than you think you’ll need!
Our cruises depart from Nerstrandkaia dock – Tromsø. Make sure to arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled departure time. This gives you enough time to check-in, get settled, and prepare for an unforgettable experience!
It’s still possible to see the Northern Lights with some cloud cover, but a clear sky is preferably. There may be major variations in the weather within the Northern Lights oval. This may include extremely local variations, and the weather changes faster than you may think. In other words, don’t worry if the forecast says cloudy because there may suddenly be a hole in the cloud cover – and the Northern Lights may appear!
Yes! The Tromsø Northern Lights cruise is family friendly. We have a big indoor lounge where children can stay warm while waiting for the aurora to appear.
Absolutely! You can capture the Northern Lights with both your phone and camera. If you’re using a camera, we recommend adjusting your settings in advance, but many modern phones can also capture the magic with the right night mode. And of course, our guides and crew are always happy to help you get the best selfie!
