Iconic Preikestolen

Lysefjord is home to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), one of Norway’s most famous hikes and landmarks. After gazing up at Preikestolen towering 604 meters above the fjord, it’s time to get ready for a memorable mountain hike to its great plateau.

When the boat docks, we take a quick bus shuttle to the Preikestolen BaseCamp trailhead. The well-marked trail winds through forests, rocky terrain and mountain lakes before reaching the Preikestolen plateau and the big reward: Breathtaking panoramic views of beautiful Lysefjord! Enjoy amazing fjord scenery and take a break at the top before making your way back down.

About the Preikestolen hike

This self-guided hike takes about four hours in all – two hours each way. The time depends on your own pace and hiking experience. In all, the trek covers eight kilometers (four kilometers each way) on a well-maintained trail with varying conditions, including stretches of rocky terrain and steep climbs.

To make the most of your hiking adventure, we recommend bringing:

  • Waterproof hiking shoes
  • Windproof jacket (dress for the day’s temperature and weather)
  • Packed lunch
  • Water

After your hike, a just under one hour bus ride takes you to the Stavanger city center through the world’s longest underwater road tunnel. Sit back, relax and reflect on an unforgettable day in Norway’s beautiful fjord landscape.
