Lysefjord Scenic Car Ferry – Connecting Fjord and Mountains

This secluded cove is one of the fjord’s most famous spots, historically known as a hiding place for thieves and tax dodgers. From the sightseeing ferry, passengers can spot the narrow cave and the striking rock formations along the mountainside.

Gaze up at the world-famous Preikestolen as it towers 604 meters above the fjord. Seeing this iconic rock formation from the water gives you a true sense of its immense scale and the dramatic vertical cliffs.

Note: To access the hiking trail to Preikestolen, travelers must drive to the Preikestolen BaseCamp parking area via Forsand.

Experience one of the Lysefjord’s most powerful waterfalls, cascading down the steep mountainside. We sail past this impressive waterfall, allowing passengers to see the water dropping directly into the fjord.

The iconic Flørli Stairs consist of 4,444 wooden steps climbing from the fjord all the way up to the mountain above Flørli. From the ferry, you can see the unique staircase rising almost 750 meters straight up from the fjord – an impressive construction originally built in the early 1900s to provide hydropower workers with easier access to the pipeline for maintenance.

Located on the western side of the mouth of the Lysefjord, Lauvvik is a key gateway for those arriving by car from Stavanger, Sandnes, or the south. If you are traveling from Southern Norway (Kristiansand) or along the coast, Lauvvik is often the most convenient starting point for your fjord crossing. The quay is easily reached, and from here, the ferry takes you directly into the most dramatic parts of the fjord as you head toward Lysebotn.

Located on the eastern side of the mouth of the Lysefjord, this quay is an ideal spot to drive onto the sightseeing ferry and begin your journey toward Lysebotn. The village sits just across the bridge from Lauvvik and is easily accessible from all parts of the Ryfylke region.

Since the Preikestolen parking area is only a 20-minute drive away, Forsand is an excellent starting or ending point for those combining the ferry with the famous hike to Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock).

You will find a Tourist Information Center at the quay, offering local hiking maps and expert advice (Open June–August).

A hidden gem that offers a more secluded fjord experience. The mountain road leading down to Songesand from Lyngsheia is known for its spectacular scenery and is a highlight for many road trippers. This stop is also a great starting point for hikers exploring the historic trails to Bakken Gard or the steep mountain path to Bratteli.

Note: Songesand is a booking-only stop and must be reserved in advance.

Famous for being home to the world’s longest wooden staircase, Flørli offers a unique combination of industrial history and outdoor adventure. With 4,444 steps climbing from the fjord to the mountain top, it is a bucket list destination for hikers. The roadless village also features a historic power station and a charming café.

Note: As Flørli is a roadless community, it is a stop for foot passengers only. Vehicles cannot drive on or off the Scenic Car Ferry at this stop. Flørli is popular for hikers staying overnight or those returning on a later ferry departure.

Located at the very end of the fjord is Lysebotn. From here, the famous Lysevegen road, with its 27 hairpin turns, climbs 900 meters up to the trailhead for the Kjeragbolten hike located at Øygardstølen (the Kjerag parking area). The village is also a starting point for travelers heading into the mountain region of Sirdal, from where you can continue your journey by road to Eastern, Southern, or Western Norway.

No, our Scenic Car Ferry departs from Lauvvik and Forsand, which is about a 45–60-minute drive from Stavanger. If you are staying in Stavanger without a car and wish to see the Lysefjord, we recommend our Lysefjord Cruise from Stavanger, which departs directly from the harbor in the city center (Strandkaien).

No. Flørli is a roadless village with no road connection. While foot passengers are welcome to disembark, it is not possible to drive on or off the sightseeing ferry at this stop.

We strongly recommend booking in advance to guarantee a space for your vehicle. Stops at Songesand must be pre-booked.

Our ferry is designed to give you the best sightseeing experience. We sail at a more leisurely pace, provide multilingual audio guiding, and slow down by waterfalls and highlights that the public ferry passes by.

Yes! Dogs are welcome on board at no extra charge, but out of consideration for other guests, they must remain on the car deck.

Yes! Arriving in Lysebotn by ferry places you at the base of the spectacular Lysevegen road. From there, it is a short but thrilling drive up the 27 hairpin bends to Ørneredet – the trailhead and parking area for the hike to Kjerag. This is one of the most scenic ways to start your Kjerag adventure.

Yes, our ferry can accommodate vehicles of all sizes, including large motorhomes, buses, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and kayaks.
